WITHIN THE WALLS - A STORY OF HEALING
Within the Walls is a documentary following the healing process of Aboriginal
inmates at William Head Institution, a federal prison located on the rugged
coast of Vancouver Island. The Aboriginal people have experienced oppression,
racism, and abuse. The negative effects of these experiences have trickled
down through the generations. Today, there is a disproportionate number
of Aboriginal People incarcerated in the federal prison system. Once in
prison, many Aboriginal inmates are introduced to the Native Brotherhood.
It is within the Brotherhood that many begin their journey on the Red Road.
The good road. The road to healing.
ON THE RED ROAD - A WALK ON THE OUTSIDE
This documentary is the sequel to Within the Walls- A Story of Healing.
It focuses on four men from the Native
Brotherhood as they make their way to the outside from a federal prison
on Vancouver Island, B.C. We experience the transition these men live,
from prison, to a halfway house, to full parole. We follow the ups and downs
of readjusting to wife and child relationships as well as social responsibilities,
many of which we often take for granted. This transition from inside a
prison to living on the outside is paralleled by the carving of the Hamasta
mask by one of the men from the Brotherhood. The mask consumes negative
energy and is used in dance.
