GABRIEL WOMEN - PASSAMAQUADDY BASKETMAKERS

One of the most accomplished and giving basketmakers of the Waponahki peoples, Mary Gabriel was born in the Passamaquoddy Indian Township of Princeton, Maine in 1908. She was honored as a National Heritage Fellow in 1994. Here she tells her inspiring story of learning the centuries-old tradition from her grandmother, and of passing it onto her two daughters, Sylvia and Clare, who are also master basketmakers. Adding a broader perspective to their story are Theresa Hoffman, executive director of the Maine Indian Basketmakers Alliance Joseph Nicholas, curator of the Waponahki Museum in Pleasant Point, Maine and Kathleen Mundell, traditional and community arts associate of the Maine Arts Commission.
