TO THE ROOTS: A MAYA REUNION
Portrays the meeting in Chiapas Mexico of
two Maya rain forest communities who rediscover their common heritage just
as outside forces are menacing them with extinction. Contemporary American
Indian concerns of cultural recuperation and autonomy are at the forefront
of this historic journey of two Maya elders. The Itza and Lacandones were
among the last Maya groups reached by Christian missionaries who accompanied
the Conquest. As a result, both groups have conserved their language and many
ancestral customs and beliefs that link them to a tradition at least 2500
years old.
