The Legacy of America's First Farmers
A thousand years before the birth of Christ, in the harsh environment of the desert Southwest, a miraculous people appeared. They brought with them that most fundamental of all changes in human destiny: taking the raw land and making it yield food. They were called "Hohokam," meaning in the Pima language "those who have gone before." Their accomplishments in desert agriculture and irrigation technology rivaled any the world had ever known. Their legacy remains alive today, flourishing on the Gila River Indian Community in Arizona. The heretofore untold story provides a fascinating glimpse into an often overlooked chapter in the proud history of America's first, and oldest, agriculture.
