TEMPLES INTO CHURCHES
All the native religions in North and South America share a belief in the bond
between human beings and nature—potentially a quite different concept
from the view of man as the culmination of Creation. Then, too, many of the
conquerors saw no contradiction between enslaving the Native Americans and bringing
their souls into Paradise. But turning temples into churches was one thing and
transforming native religions into Christianity quite another. This program
shows how, though the emblems are Christian, the native people still pray to
the old gods. (23 minutes)
