NATIVE AMERICA: Removal
When the United States of America became a nation in 1776, Native Americans were not
considered part of it. In many ways, they were considered separate nations.
The rapid expansion of the new nation created intense competition for Native
American homeland. Unable to uphold treaties and resolve the violent conflicts
from this competition, the government began a policy known as "removal."
In this program, students learn about this important--and often overlooked--period
of American history. They hear how the policy came to pass, how Native Americans
were forced onto new lands and the devastating effects of the policy on native
America.
