Heart of the People

Heart of the People is the story of the Huu-ay-aht, native peoples from the westcoast of Vancouver Island and their centuries-old relationship to their river. Once numbering close to 8,000 people the Huu-ay-aht, great whalers of the past exist today as a proud community of 486. Now they are determined to see a restoration of the Sarita River, whose habitat was destroyed by clear-cut logging in the 1940's and 50's. They are appealing to the non-native community to join them in this project so that the millions of salmon which once thrived here may return to feed future generations of all races.
