After the Civil War ended, soldiers and settlers began pouring into the vast hunting grounds of the Lakota Nation. After fighting to stem the tide, the futility of war against the United States caused the Lakotas to soon accept peace. As the intruders continued their extermination of the buffalo the chief source of food for the nomadic Lakotas they rose again in 1876 under Chief Sitting Bull, winning a stunning but short-lived victory over Colonel George Custer at Little Bighorn. Forcibly resettled on the small Pine Ridge reservation, the Lakotas attempted a final revolt in 1890, which ended tragically in the massacre at Wounded Knee Creek. This sensitively wrought program chronicles America's westward expansion and the subsequent destruction of the Lakota way of life.
